Following the release of the EPA Record of Decision in 2013, Arconic (formerly Alcoa) conducted a series of investigations in the river in support of the remedial design. These studies included additional sampling, geotechnical investigations and surveys as well as habitat assessment and cultural resources work. Specific information developed from these studies included identifying the final limits of where remedial work will be conducted and understanding current habitat conditions in support of habitat restoration work. The remedial design was then developed using the information from these studies. Arconic worked with the EPA, NYSDEC, NYSDOH, and the SRMT to develop the remedial design and the Final Design Report was approved in 2019. Arconic also designed and constructed land-based facilities to support in-river remediation work, including a staging area near the Route 131 bridge and expanding the secure landfill on the Arconic Massena West property. This work started in spring 2017 and was completed in 2018. The major in-river remedial construction activities started in 2019 and were completed in 2021.
